My First School Memories

My first memory of school is the principal day of elementary school. It is my first day without the toys and a dress with a decent style. I professed to be a decent child, sitting on my seat cautiously. Even more than that, I feel like a different person than I was in high school, which is a rare observation because I think it’s often hard to notice change in yourself since you hang out with yourself 24/7. Here are some thoughts about what else has changed. D E S K   S P A C E As a student, I spend an inordinate amount of time sitting at my desk. As a student studying computer science, I spend nearly all of my waking hours hunched over a desk coding. Therefore, my study locations hold a very special place in my heart, as they’re often the place of absolute highs and lows, where epiphanies have occurred and tears of confusion have fallen. My desk was once loaded with worn, tabbed history and English books, about European countries and fantastical, faraway lands. Now, they hold books about a different world. Computer science books, marked with free career fair pens about technical interviews or unopened textbooks for GIR classes like biology or physics. I’ve also found that I like switching up where I work, sometimes a corner desk in Rotch Library, other times in a coffee shop in Central. i literally moved my whole life to Boston T H E   R O U T E   H O M E Before moving to Boston, winter was synonymous with the air fogging at me. Now, I’m reminded that the rest of the world often endures (and enjoys) this thing called seasons. Instead of driving home, I now travel down dorm row to and from my cozy double in Burton-Conner. It’s the perfect time to update my mom on my day or finish up a HASS reading. so foreign ah R E S T A U R A N T S Being off the meal plan has forced me to venture further into Kendall and Central squares to obtain food and given me a new appreciation for nearby restaurants like Saloniki’s and Dig Inn. I’m actually currently writing this on the way to a ballroom competition at Columbia University. All questions I wish I knew the answer to but don’t. What hasn’t changed throughout are the people that I look to for guidance and laughs and hugs, people who make me feel loved and who I love. I’ve expanded that circle of people, but the people who enter tend to stay. They are the people who keep me grounded when I question myself, and I’m so thankful for keeping them in my life. The study published by DeVries and Feldman in 1983, showed that token reinforcement can increase the rate of sight word acquisition within students with a learning disability in a resource room setting. The study was comprised of two participants, a nine year old boy with directionality and perceptual difficulties and an eleven year old boy with auditory figure ground discrimination. Both participants were two years below grade level in word recognition, had a diagnosis of a learning disability and average intellectual function level, and both were from southwestern USA. After a baseline of each student’s sight words recognition, multiple lists of different five unknown sight words were selected, to use during the intervention. The teacher explained the guidelines of the token system; if the student could remember a sight word 24 hours after the lesson, the teacher would get put a star next to the word. Once the student earned 5 stars (one for each word) they would a sticker on their goal sheet. DeVries and Feldman’s study used stickers as tokens. The first freedom states that teachers have a right to conduct research in whatever area they desire to improve their performance when exercising academic duties. Research is a basic tool of learning through which scholars expand their knowledge and come up with related concepts. It is through research, that scholars could identify flaws, which could have been present in texts. Knowledge represents ideas that one researched and presented depending on the evidence and findings. There could have been flaws in the past that occurred due to the poor methods of research then. With modern technology in place, scholars can revisit the concepts with new hypothesis and ideas (Nelson, 2010, p 1, L 15). The second freedom is that the teachers have a right to discuss their own relevant ideas in class. With good research in place, the teachers could come up with ideas that relate to the topic in class. Such ideas could be absent in the course text, but still be a matter of importance for discussion in class. The teachers, however, should be keen not to introduce irrelevant material during lessons in class. In addition, controversial ideas should not come up during a discussion in classes. Topics relating to religion could be sensitive when discussed in classes. In as much as there is freedom of speech and academic freedom, religion, and such sensitive issues could result to complications that limit other people’s right,s (Krell, 2010, P 261, L 14).
